The story of Russell Outdoors Clothing is rooted deeply in the story of America. At the turn of the century in Alabama, a man called Benjamin Russell rallied to get a small town back on its feet after a devastating fire. That town and its football fields and grocery stores, baseball diamonds and hospitals became the birthplace of Russell Outdoors, Russell Athletics, and Russel Outdoors Wholesale.
The company began as Russell Manufacturing Company, a tiny factory with 10 sewing machines and eight knitters that produced their first knit shirt for women and children. Yet a passion for sports would soon come to define Benjamin Russell's brand. In the 1920's Russell's son Benny approached his father with an innovative new idea: to produce an all-cotton practice football jersey. The new jersey would provide a solution to the friction and scratchy wool material of traditional jerseys. The football jersey became the first ever sweatshirt, rolling out of the Russell Athletic mills in 1930. To meet the growing demand of outdoor and athletic wear, Russell Outdoors Wholesale began selling clothing in bulk.
Throughout the 1940s Russell Outdoors Wholesale provided the US military with t-shirts, undergarments, shirts, athletic garments, and outerwear that both held up on the battlefield and the homefront. By the 1960s the brand became synonymous with athletics, becoming the largest manufacturer of sports apparel and uniforms in the United States.
In the 1980s Russell became the official uniform of Little League Baseball and Softball, firmly cementing itself in American history. By the early 2000s and Russell's 100-year anniversary, the brand held its prominence in American sportswear manufacturing as well as celebrating the number of other functional, comfortable, and uniquely American apparel and textile brands that fall under its umbrella.
