Why Dye Sublimation Only Works on Polyester and What That Means for Your Print

Dye sublimation produces some of the most vivid, permanent prints in decoration — full color, edge to edge, with zero texture on the fabric. It also has one hard rule that trips people up constantly: it only works on polyester. Not "works better on polyester." Only. Here's the actual chemistry behind that limit, and why it matters for what you order.
What's Actually Happening to the Fabric
The name is literal. Sublimation is the process of a solid turning directly into a gas without passing through a liquid phase, and that's exactly what the dye does. It's printed onto transfer paper as a solid, then heat and pressure — typically around 400°F — turn it into a gas that penetrates into the open molecular structure of the polyester fiber. As the fabric cools, the dye resolidifies while it's still inside the fiber. It doesn't sit on top of the fabric the way ink does; it becomes part of the fiber itself.
Why Cotton Can't Do This
Polyester is a synthetic polymer with a molecular structure that opens up under heat and lets that gaseous dye in. Cotton is a natural cellulose fiber with a completely different structure, and it has nowhere for the gas to bond. Try to sublimate onto cotton and the dye has nothing to grab onto — it sits on the surface at best and rinses out in the first wash. This isn't a quality difference between fabrics; it's a hard chemical mismatch that no amount of heat or pressure works around.

Screen printing can lay opaque white ink under a design to print bright colors on a black shirt; sublimation has no equivalent, since the dye is meant to become part of the fiber's existing color rather than cover it. That's why sublimated apparel almost always starts on white or light-colored polyester.

Can sublimation work on a poly-cotton blend?
Only the polyester portion of the fabric will actually take the dye. A 50/50 blend will print with a visible faded or heathered look rather than solid color, since only half the fibers are bonding with the dye.
Does sublimated ink ever crack or peel?
No — since the dye is inside the fiber rather than layered on top, there's no separate ink film that can crack or peel the way it can with screen printing.
Why can't I sublimate a dark polyester shirt?
The dye is translucent, so it blends with whatever color is already underneath it. On a dark garment, that means the design comes out muddy or invisible rather than true to the file's colors.
